Frequently Asked Questions

You’re thinking about getting counselling but aren’t sure about talking to a stranger about issues that are closest to your heart? At the Parramatta Psychology Clinic, we understand that it’s not easy to get started.

We want to make it as simple as possible for you to take that first step.

When should I get counselling?

It is normal to feel anxious and depressed at times, and to feel like you are not coping. We recommend that you access support if how you feel is impacting on important things in your life – like on your relationships with loved ones, your performance at work, your sleep and your mood on most days. The best person to help you make this decision is your GP.

When to get Counselling

How do I get counselling?

  1. Contact our friendly staff and ask any questions you have.
  2. To book an appointment, you can either call us on (02) 9687 9776 or click here to book online.

Speak with your GP about your mental health. Your doctor will complete a Mental Health Treatment Plan with you. This records your current concerns, your goals for therapy and treatment recommendations. Bring this with your referral letter to your first appointment.

How much does counselling cost?

The cost of counselling depends on who you are seeing, when you attend and what the service is. Each counselling session is 50 minutes long.

  • Weekday  individual counselling session costs $150.00 unless bulk-billing.
  • Weekend individual counselling costs $180 per session.
  • Relationship counselling costs $210 for the initial assessment at $180 per session there after.

You can be eligible for the Medicare rebate if you have a GP referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP). This is because of a government initiative called the Better Access to Mental Health initiative.

The rebate per session is $84.80 – meaning you end up paying $65.20 per session – and you can use up to 10 sessions per calendar year under this entitlement. A GP will review your MHTP after 6 sessions and decide if referring for another 4 sessions would be helpful.

You don’t need a GP referral to get counselling, but it does make it more cost effective.

We also offer bulk-billing or no-cost services between 9am and 3pm under Medicare, if you have a MHTP. Please contact us for more information.
